CCI is instability of the craniocervical junction which is where the back of the skull connects to the cervical spine. There weak, stretched ligaments that cause this. Patients have looseness where their neck connects to their head.
Craniocervical instability (CCI) is seen in patients who have been involved in car accidents or individuals with severe arthritis of the cervical spine. It is also seen in patients who have a connective tissue disorder where connective tissue is weak. One of these is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Craniocervical instability (CCI) can also be a complication of the spinal surgery, suboccipital decompression for Chiari malformation.
